Guitar Pickup Choices

So many choices… Humbuckers, Mini Humbuckers, Stacked Humbuckers, single-coil, covers on or off, output high or low and of course, how much money do you want to spend? Take your time and listen to as many different styles and tones as you can. Understand your style and the sound you want to achieve. There are many different articles and demonstrations on u-tube. Many players in Marietta and Alpharetta Georgia use low output pickups. I enjoy these because I rely on pedals to provide breakup and distortion. High output pickups provide a little more ragged output at lower volumes.

What kind of capacitors – This is where a finely tuned ear can be tested. Many players in Roswell prefer the older style “Bumble Bee” type Capacitors. The most widely used are Orange Drops. I find it difficult to tell the difference. When installing Pots or Pickups make sure to keep the wiring as neat as possible so the cavity doesn’t look like a rat’s nest. Note, some pickups allow for individual pole adjustment. For instance, the un-wound G sting may come through more than you want. This can be adjusted to help the sound blend better. All pickups have screws on the ends that raise and lower the pickup. These are great tone controls and can adjust the treble/bass sides up or down. All the changes are subtle, but you can use these adjustments to dial in your tone.
